This project started as a curiosity-driven experiment to push basic static-electricity concepts into something physically testable. The goal was to build a wearable setup that could charge my body enough to produce a noticeable discharge when contacting grounded objects.

Concept and Setup

I used a negative ion generator powered by 4 AA batteries and packaged the components in a 3D-printed enclosure mounted inside a boot. Ground reference was routed to the floor and the high-voltage output was tied to an ankle contact point.

Design Choices

Powering from AA cells worked for prototyping, though a smaller source with a boost converter would likely have improved power density and battery efficiency. The build was intentionally simple to focus on circuit behavior and field effects.

Unexpected Issues

I quickly learned that standard boot materials were not ideal for insulation at these potentials. The device also produced an audible high-voltage hum, which made the electrical activity impossible to ignore during use.

Observed Behavior

Touching conductive surfaces produced sharp static-like discharges similar to carpet buildup and door-handle shock, but more repeatable. It was a direct demonstration of charge accumulation, ion flow, and circuit completion through the body-ground path.

Takeaways

Beyond the novelty, this experiment taught practical lessons about insulation limits, high-voltage handling, and safer circuit planning. It was a chaotic build, but it made electrical potential and ion movement tangible in a way textbook study never could.
