Dot Peen Machine Restoration

This project started when my dad brought home a mystery dot peen machine his friend likely found at a flea market. It arrived as a pile of wires and unknown parts with no manual, basically a high-tech paperweight.

Identifying the Machine

The first hurdle was basic identification. Hardware switches were labeled in Chinese, so I used Google Lens to scan labels and eventually traced the unit to an old inactive Amazon listing. That gave me just enough reference info to map out what components I was dealing with.

Software Recovery

Finding control software was its own challenge. I eventually tracked down ThorX6 from a very sketchy-looking source, installed it carefully, and confirmed the machine could communicate with my computer.

System Validation

Once connected, the machine executed its test motions correctly, which confirmed drive electronics and communication were alive. I did not have a compressor available at the time, so I could not run a full engraving cycle.

Result

Getting the machine from unknown state to successful communication and motion testing was a big win. It was a great troubleshooting exercise in hardware identification, software sourcing, and cautious bring-up of industrial equipment.
